Tanks were originally designed by the British Navy. They were considered ships that went on land. These "landships" or tanks, as they would soon be called due to certain similarities with a fish tank, did not begin being researched until midway through the war. Production began even later. They were great in concept, able to roll right over trenches and through no mans land, fearing nothing but artillery fire, but in practice they were quite ineffective. The rain turned all the land into one giant mud pit, and often the tanks were being abandoned in the middle of an assault due to the fact they were stuck.
Tanks definitely changed the way they fought. No longer was it man on man, there were giant metal behemoths rolling across the war zone. The later sophistication of the "landships" led to major roles during World War Two, where there were battle fought solely with tanks.
Airplanes had an interesting role in World War One. They were mainly used as recon until the invention of the interrupter and a machine gun could be placed facing forward. They were not made for war, having to be made out of light weight materials to be able to lift off. Often they could be shot down simply with small arms fire from the trenches below.
Airplanes changed the way they fought. They could no longer hide from one another as easily as planes were used to sight them from the sky. As they became better equipped for fighting, there were more and more battle fought in the air.
